Taking the “Killer” Out of Your Couch

A Health Threat Couched In Your Furniture:  If you’re like 90% of Americans, every day you sit on a couch that contains a pound or more of toxic flame-retardant chemicals. These flame retardants have been linked with devastating health problems including cancer, reduced IQ, fertility, obesity, and more.  And to make matters worse, these flame retardant chemicals don’t even protect you from fires.

Good News is Coming:  On February 8, 2013, California proposed a new flammability standard that will protect people from fires without the use of toxic chemicals. After almost four decades of toxic exposure, this is great news! The new standard is on track to go into effect on January 1, 2014 although manufacturers will not be required to comply with the new standard until January 1, 2015.

How You Can Help: The flame retardant chemical industry will try to convince furniture manufacturers to keep the flame retardants in their products. Don’t let the chemical industry’s influence stand in the way of your family’s health! Furniture manufacturers need to hear that consumers want toxic-free, fire safe furniture NOW!

California’s standard has become the de facto national requirement, so please take a moment to tell furniture manufacturers that you want toxic-free fire safety NOW!
